A key highlight is the set of enhancements to the cabinet view. Starting with version 3.14, cabinets from multiple rooms can be displayed and edited together within a single view. This functionality was one of the most frequently requested enhancements and has now been fully implemented.

New flexibility in the cabinet view

With the new multi-rack view, interconnected IT infrastructures can be documented more accurately, network paths can be traced directly, and changes can be implemented more efficiently.

The new view enables simultaneous work on any number of racks. Each opened rack is displayed in its own pane and can be edited independently. Changes are applied immediately and are visible within the overall context.

Fast traceability of cable paths

A key advantage of the new view is the ability to display network paths across the opened racks or components. Cable connections are visualized end-to-end, regardless of which rack they originate from or terminate in.

Cable paths visible across rooms help identify relationships and plan changes more precisely. Parallel work in the extended cabinet view saves time, reduces potential sources of error, and improves clarity in complex environments.

Parallel work without context switching

By displaying multiple racks in parallel, it becomes possible not only to immediately verify dependencies and cabling between racks, but also to logically group components (e.g. by location, function, or system layer). During expansions, visibility into available space and free ports is maintained.

With the new cabinet view, devices can now be easily moved between racks from different rooms using drag and drop. Cabling can be retained if desired, ensuring that relocations are documented correctly immediately. The extended cabinet view provides a unified and flexible workspace for all tasks related to physical network documentation.

Further detailed improvements

Version 3.14 also introduces numerous new capabilities in the area of Pathfinder Discovery, further improving the accuracy and completeness of automated network synchronization. Hostnames and additional IP address attributes are now updated directly by discovery jobs, ensuring that captured data remains consistently up to date. In addition, support for LLDP and CDP has been integrated. This enables information about neighboring devices to be automatically detected and imported.

In addition, device classification has been enhanced, enabling more accurate assignment and representation of discovered systems. Newly added is support for reading VLAN memberships from Ruckus ICX and Moxa devices. Bachmann PDUs are also newly supported in discovery.

Discovery in distributed networks

With the upcoming Pathfinder release, users will be able to choose between agentless and agent-based discovery. This allows them to flexibly adapt their discovery strategy to the architecture of their network.

Discovery agents can be strategically placed in network segments that are not directly accessible from the central Pathfinder server – for example, behind firewalls.
In these cases, the agents perform local scans and securely transmit the results back to the server. This enables Pathfinder Discovery to be used flexibly even in distributed infrastructures.

Unlike many other tools that operate solely in a centralised and agentless manner, Pathfinder offers true flexibility for segmented, secured, or geographically distributed network environments.

Direct device integration with template mapping

Starting with version 3.13, scanned devices can be inserted directly into the existing documentation using suggested templates. To enable this, Pathfinder analyses the scan results, identifies the type and function of each device, and offers suitable templates.

Based on this new template mapping feature, previously unknown devices can be assigned to a template and placed with just a few clicks. This saves time, prevents errors, and turns discovered devices into immediately usable assets within the existing network documentation.

IT asset discovery is the process of identifying and mapping all devices within a network. Starting with version 3.12, Pathfinder not only enables comprehensive network scans but also collects information from SNMP-enabled devices. The new module seamlessly integrates the retrieved device details into the existing documentation.

Pathfinder Discovery replaces the existing SNMP module after updating to version 3.12 and provides extensive information, particularly useful for network analysis and network management. The new discovery module is currently available as a BETA version. Future releases will further expand its functionality.

Optimized Design & New Features

Pathfinder version 3.12 introduces a new cabinet view for all users. This update fulfills numerous customer requests, providing an even more precise and structured representation of data center infrastructure. In addition to a fundamentally redesigned visualization of cabinets and installed devices, the cabinet view also includes a variety of new features.

Pathfinder Server 2.0

In parallel with the upcoming Pathfinder release 3.12, we are launching a new server version. The update to version 2.0 delivers significant enhancements for all users employing the Pathfinder Server. In the future, an integrated plugin system for hosting and executing Python scripts will be available. These plugins enable:

• Third-party integrations
• Additional analysis or processing functions, and
• Automation or customization of workflows.

Furthermore, we are offering new libraries that allow users to easily access the server from their Python scripts or C# programs. The server interface has also been expanded with new discovery functionalities.

At the request of numerous customers, the “unpatch device” function has been fundamentally expanded. Here, users can decide whether only the immediate patch connection should be removed or the entire network path should be unpatched. From v3.10, it is also possible to print out several network paths at the same time. New fields for ports and cables have also been introduced.

Extended port libraries

A port or connector is the physical end point between two devices or parts of devices. This might sound redundant at first, but it is not. Depending on the type of signals, these electrical connections have to meet very specific requirements.

Due to these diverse requirements, a large number of connectors and sockets have become standard in the market. To enable you to map the plug connections realistically, Pathfinder provides you with significantly expanded port libraries as of v3.9.

New manual

With version 3.9 we also launch a new product manual. This will provide users and testers with even better support when using the Pathfinder Suite in the future. Over the past few weeks, numerous manual articles have been thoroughly revised. Existing manual sections have been comprehensively expanded and supplemented with practical use cases.

Use the new manual to get started with Pathfinder, to get to know the tool even better or to train new team members. The release notes will also be published in the new manual space in the future. In addition, we will give you the opportunity to leave feedback in the future. So you can rate manual pages you like or tell us your suggestions and wishes in the comment field. Mark disabled ports

Users will have the option of marking ports as disabled in the status. The previous port states “defective, free and reserved” will therefore be extended with an additional port state that will be particularly relevant in scenarios like data theft and hacker attacks.

Unique identifiers down to port level

Version 3.8 introduces Unique Identifiers (UID) for all objects, i.e. an unique identification for every object and IT asset. Each element in Pathfinder receives a specific identification marker. The UIDs are now also shown in all views, reports and labels.

Storage management

With version 3.7 Pathfinder displays an up-to-date inventory information. The storage management has been firmly integrated into the sidebar as a new feature. All IT assets that are in the storage room are listed there. Assets can be moved to and from the storage rooms via drag & drop. Customizable tables allow you to categorize and group the storage room inventory and provides options to export the tables as well. All additions to and withdrawals from the storage room inventory can thus be documented easily and incidentally. The new storage room management is a helpful feature that will actively support you in your IT lifecycle management from here on.

Device preview

Around 30,000 device templates are currently available for import in the online catalog. The new Pathfinder release adds a preview section to the existing import dialog window. This means that a preview of the respective device template is now shown on the screen without the need to even import it first. Searching for the right network devices or deciding on which templates to import has never been easier. We are also supporting you with better compatible module searches. Using the “Show modules (by slot type)” option, Pathfinder will deliver the matching modules and shorten the search times tremendously.

Cable overview

As a specialized cable management solution, Pathfinder will support you even better in the planning, documentation and management of fiber infrastructures in the future. With the 3.7 release, we now offer all users the ability to more accurately document extensive fiber infrastructures.

You can view and edit fiber usage and utilization directly in the properties dialog. Operators of large fiber optic networks know that detailed documentation of individual connections by fiber is an indispensable prerequisite for meaningful evaluations and reports. Additional requirements such as dedicated lines, dark fiber or system switching fibers can be better assessed and planned in the future through the new performance overview.

The critical zero-day vulnerability called log4shell in the widespread Java logging library log4j endangers numerous servers and apps. It opens security gaps in many services and applications. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) rates the risk on the so-called CVSS scale with 10, the highest possible value.

None of the products in the Pathfinder Suite uses Java. Pathfinder is not affected by the security vulnerability.
